Will Smith recently joined Tyra Banks on a video call to reenact one of their most memorable scenes from the 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
“This next piece is one of my favorite moments, I love that we did this,” Smith, who starred in the series, said as he and Banks watched a clip of an episode together from their homes.
Banks had a recurring role in the series,…

Everyone loves Will Smith; The Fresh Prince of Belair is one of my favorite shows of all time. Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith are big stars in the entertainment industry. Both stars have dabbled and had success with music and movies. However, the two have a son by the name of Jaden Smith who is taking the entertainment industry by storm. Jaden Smith has grown into a star himself. Jaden has had great success in both the music and film industry. Starring in his first film alongside his dad in the Pursuit of Happiness to dropping an album entitled Erys on July 5, 2019 which is his middle name spelled backwards.
Our first glimpse of Jaden was in the Pursuit of Happiness where he would go on to star in movies such as The Karate Kid remake and After Earth. He also starred in the Netflix Original The Get Down, which happened to be one of my Netflix faves until it was cancelled after two seasons. Jaden is also a rapper like his dad however they have very different styles. We first got a glimpse of Jaden’s musical abilities with his rap in Justin Bieber’s song Never Say Never for the movie Karate Kid. If you were to play the song right now, I could recite every word of Jaden’s rap. Of Jaden’s most recent songs my favorite would be Icon. The song shows his maturity and gained him mainstream recognition in the music industry. His new album Erys i have yet to listen to but if the snippets I've heard are any indication of what the album is like it will most definitely find its way onto my Apple Music Library. Jaden has really been stepping outside of his parents’ shadow in the entertainment industry becoming a household name all on his own.
Another way Jaden is stepping out of his parents’ shadow is through his philanthropic works. Jaden along with his dad has created the water company Just Water, in an effort to reduce pollution in the United States the water is in boxes instead of bottles. He has stated that he plans to get Just Water to citizens of Flint, Michigan who are still dealing with unclean water pipes in their houses. Most recently he fed the homeless in Downtown Los Angeles with food from I Love You Restaurant food truck. The food truck serves vegan food, a healthier option for those able to take part in this movement.
Jaden Smith has become a star in his own right and he’s only 21 years old with the potential to be even bigger than he already is. Jaden is making a difference in the world and entertainment industry. I can’t wait to witness how far he goes with his efforts. Now let me get to listening to that new album of his!

Interview with Scene TV and FWOCuk
Why Don’t I See People Like Me on TV?
Ever wondered why our TV screens appear whitewashed? Lack of representation is a thing, a growing concern amongst calls for diversity. I catch up with the founder of FWOCuk and Scene TV to find ways in which we can combat the problem!
Scene TV is a reputable platform created to showcase diversity and inclusion of the television and film industry. With such lack of representation on our screens, founder Michelle Owusu shared her thoughts on how we can combat the problem- and how she aims to change it! She spoke on the challenges of the generalised media and the ‘constant stereotypes on British TV’. Across the years we have had just a handful of shows that met the needs of black people, who just wanted to be able to relate. Michelle says here was the emergence of ‘My Wife and Kids, The Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince of Belair to satisfy’ her ‘hunger’. It was only after she left university that she decided that she wanted to showcase ‘content and creators from underrepresented backgrounds’ in the UK.
So what’s blocking such avenues for people of colour to reach our TV’s? Could it simply be because there are not enough minorities interested in the field of Television and film, could it be that they just don’t make the cut? All of these questions have fallen short to be even slightly logical. Michelle believes it’s all down to ‘diversity and the inclusion of all’. In all significance, we have a shortfall of success stories to date. Viola Davis has made history but despite her paving the way for not only women, but black women Michelle says ‘it’s going to take years and constant effort to move the dial so that all are fairly represented’.
The call for diversity doesn’t stop there! Founder of FWOCuk Organisation Leonia Goromba shared her take on the British Media. She believes the lack of representation is down to one reason. ‘The people running the media outlets are very rarely from ethnic minority backgrounds’ she explained. To keep up with meeting diversity requirements, Leonia says ‘inclusion is having one person from an ethnic minority working on a show or writing an article because that is all they need to tick the equality box’.
For both women, they had only noticed such lack of representation later on in life. Miss Goromba recalled not noticing any issues growing up, having the likes of ‘Baby Father, Lenny Henry Show and watching the iconic Trevor MacDonald present the news’. She went on to explain that ‘black people have been silenced in the media as we are no longer doing what ‘they’ want us to do’. With the evolution of media outlets, controversial speakers, topics or hearing the voice of people that don’t fit the typical ‘feed’ – the media is a constantly changing world. As Leonia recalled ‘it is so easy to pick up a camera or post your thoughts online’. It shows that the silence on diversity can be broken, and if the industries top names fail to do so, people of colour have to take the intuitive themselves. This led to my last question, with such lack of opportunities, where would someone start? Like many sectors nowadays Leonia explained that ‘getting into the industry is based largely on who you know’. With social media a booming platform, she advises putting your work out there using ‘Youtube and blogging to make it a lot easier’.

FIT Museum: Black Fashion Designers
The FIT museum is constantly bringing in new exhibits that are open to students and to the public. It is a great source to learn about fashion all over the world. The FIT museum is currently featuring an exhibit on influential black fashion designers. Throughout decades, these designers have been unrecognized and unrepresented. The idea of the exhibit is to showcase the work of these designers, as well as share their stories. According to the FIT website, VogueRunway.com covers only about 1% on African American designers. The museum presents a variety of styles and garments from different decades from all over the world. The time frame ranges from the 1950’s to present day designs. Some of the categories include, eveningwear, menswear, street style, experimental fashion, and African influences.
This was my second time seeing the exhibit, but it was a much more impactful experience the second time around. The first time we came with a class and have very little time to look through the exhibit. I didn’t get to consider the designs or their significance. The second time around was much better since we had a guide to walk is through and describe each section. When I have learned about fashion, I recognize big names like Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Most the names I recognize are from white designers, and I realized I could recognize very few Black designers before seeing this exhibit. Many of the designs seemed to tell a story, they are full of cultural influences and detail. I loved the fun aspects to many of the design features. It was cool to see some of the grunge, relaxed styles that were worn by Will Smith for the Fresh Prince of Belair. They were iconic and created a whole new idea of street style. I also enjoyed seeing the dress that Michelle Obama wore, since she has such a beautiful and classic sense of style
The designer I chose to discuss is Mimi Plange. She is a Ghanian-born designer that uses her background as inspiration for her clothing. As we walked through the museum, her garment really stuck out to me. The mannequin was wearing a pale pink/nude dress with a quilting technique. The design of the quilting was long curves along the body of the dress in a wave shape. I then saw the photo of inspiration and it was an African man with scars designed onto his skin. This technique of a raised pattern onto the body is a similar concept to a tattoo. They are beautifully crafted and gift a 3-D look to the classic tattoo. The process looks insanely painful and elaborate, but it represents tradition. I thought that Mimi had an interesting take on it by how she created the dress and made it a fashion inspiration. I think that a lot of designers today just design to sell. Few people have a really story behind their collections, so I was drawn to Mimi and the meaning she puts behind her work. Overall, I really enjoyed this exhibit and I felt that I learned a lot about designers that deserved attention long ago. The FIT museum is a place I will return for future exhibits.
